Canadian Engineering Leadership Conference

Student Perspectives and Insights

Shahrzad Sarrafizadeh

2nd Year Software Engineering Student

  • I attended this conference to get more involved with the engineering community. I wanted to grow my leadership skills so that I could be a better-contributing member of the EUS, CS Faculty, and Engineering Faculty.

  • I met many individuals from diverse backgrounds across Canada, studying various engineering fields. It was an opportunity to take a glimpse into the lives of other engineering disciplines, whether it was through presentations or interactions with fellow delegates, and it has helped me broaden my perspective towards many possible career paths.

  • I enjoyed case competition #2, where we proposed a new plan to FREDEnergy. For the purpose of this case competition, they were looking for opportunities to generate more electricity for their citizens, emphasizing sustainability, economics, and reliability. We had 40 minutes to develop our plan within pre-selected groups and 2 minutes to present an elevator pitch. This was a great opportunity to stretch my project planning and proposal skills under time constraints and with limited information.

  • I recommend taking advantage of these opportunities as much as possible. You gain so much from them. Not only do you attend many interesting presentations, case competitions, and tours, but you also meet incredible people and exchange a lot of cool ideas.

Bibianna Abah

3rd Year Chemical Engineering Student

  • I attended this conference to gain insights from seasoned professionals and expand my knowledge base in leadership and professional growth. I was eager to network with fellow peers to exchange ideas, share experiences, and learn from diverse perspectives. Additionally, I aimed to add more value to myself by focusing on improving key skills such as communication, public speaking, networking and leadership. This is important for enhancing my ability to lead effectively, connect with others, and inspire positive change within my community.

  • I'd start by saying that I didn't know I would not be recognized as a licensed engineer after I graduate so this conference really enlightened me where I was ignorant. It also helped me with figuring out what I want for myself professionally in the long run.

  • Listening to Passionate Ncube on "From Ordinary to Extraordinary" thought me the importance of collaboration and networking. He encourage us to foster connections with our peers and wherever we step into as this opens doors of opportunity. Not only was his content valuable, his delivery of the presentation was amazing, engaging and interesting. He left me feeling inspired.

  • Go for it! Don't think twice. You get to meet amazing people and professionals who you would learn a lot from. Start now to build your network, expand your knowledge and enhance your skills. Your future starts now and the ball is in your court. 1 Day or Day 1.
